Deploy or Die is a 2D action roguelite that frames software development as a high-stakes survival challenge on PC in Early Access.
Gameplay
Players select a class, environment, difficulty, and a seven-character seed that functions as a commit hash to replay identical runs. Navigation follows a branch graph modeled on git history, where each commit generates a procedurally created scrolling map filled with enemy groups, ground loot, and an exit portal. Five pipeline stages lead to a boss encounter, after which the run attempts a Production release. Success or failure grants Insights spent in Organization Settings to unlock new permissions, classes, items, and events.
Core threats include Memory Leak, where prolonged time on a map escalates RAM usage through stages until OOM Killer ends the run. Technical Debt accumulates from shortcuts that boost immediate power but trigger the Legacy Monolith at full capacity. Code Review presents three open Pull Requests, with only one merge option available. Environments progress from Dev to Friday Deploy, each introducing distinct rules upon unlock.
Game Modes
The experience centers on roguelite runs structured around the five-stage pipeline. Four difficulties alter the challenge: Onboarding for initial play, On-Call for standard pressure, Legacy for heightened constraints, and Zero Downtime for the strictest conditions. Seven biomes appear across runs, with five selected per attempt based on the seed. Runs conclude either in failure labeled as a build failure or success marked as a production deployment.
Classes and Progression
Nine classes offer distinct playstyles. The initial four include Frontend Dev, Backend Dev, DevOps Engineer, and QA Engineer. Five more unlock through Insights: Scrum Master, Intern, UX/UI Designer, Product Owner, and Middle Manager. Each features a signature ability such as Hot Reload, Load Balancer, Self-hosted Agent, Test Suite, Daily Standup, Chaos Monkey, Visual Redesign, Reprioritization, or Delegation. Class-specific cosmetics, including paints, accessories, trails, and firing styles, total 81 options unlocked through repeated play with that class and carry no stat changes.
More than 60 combinable items and over 50 enemies with varied behaviors support the runs, alongside eight multi-phase bosses and one ultimate boss. Over 30 achievements track progress, supported by an integrated wiki and a changelog styled after git history.
Controls and Accessibility
Full support exists for keyboard and mouse or controllers including Xbox, PlayStation, and Steam Deck. Menus and all gameplay function without a keyboard or mouse. Text remains readable on Steam Deck, with options for reduced flashes, colorblind mode, and disabled screenshake. Steam Cloud handles saves. An optional toxic management setting, off by default, adds commentary from management when enemies approach.
Graphics and music generate procedurally within the game itself, using no external assets.
Is It Worth Playing?
Deploy or Die suits players who enjoy roguelite runs built around escalating mechanical pressure and thematic humor drawn from development workflows. The single-player structure emphasizes repeated attempts with procedural maps, class variety, and meta unlocks via Insights. Early Access status means the core loop of pipeline stages, boss fights, and environmental rules is available, with ongoing potential for expansions to the nine classes, item combinations, and biomes. Those drawn to precise control schemes, accessibility features, and replayability through seeds will find the systems align directly with that preference.
