Nachtfrost is an action indie early access zombie survival shooter set on PC during the final months of World War II. Players face waves of the undead that grow stronger with each round across occupied Europe, testing how long a lone survivor or small team can hold out against the rising dead.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on round-based survival in which the dead arrive in greater numbers, move faster, and strike harder as rounds progress. Defenders board up windows to slow the advance, then rely on shooting, stabbing, and quick movement to stay alive. Kills award points that unlock wall weapons, character perks, and new sections of each map. Locating and activating the power source requires following clues through darkened areas. Random rewards come from the Supply Cache or the Lucky Dip machine, while the Armorer's Bench allows weapon upgrades and the addition of special ammunition types.
Each of the six maps draws from specific historical locations and dates in 1944 and 1945. La Ferme Lebrun places action at a Normandy farm amid hedgerows in June. Saint-Aubert uses a convent field hospital in the same region during July. Fernamt Aachen covers a telephone exchange in the besieged city of Aachen in October. Rabenstein shifts to an asylum in Thuringia in November. Isfjord Station takes place at a weather station on Spitsbergen in March 1945. Werk Neun concludes the campaign inside an underground facility in the Harz Mountains in April 1945.
Game Modes
Nachtfrost supports solo play or online co-op for up to four players through Steam or local area network connections. Teammates can revive one another, share map awareness, and coordinate to push survival records further as a squad. The experience remains focused on the round-based zombie defense loop without additional named modes at launch.
Maps and Setting
The six maps form a complete World War II campaign that spans Western and Central Europe as well as the Arctic. Each location carries distinct layout challenges, from open farm fields to confined asylum corridors and subterranean industrial spaces. Progression through these maps follows the historical timeline of the war's closing phase while the undead threat escalates nightly.
Is It Worth Playing?
Nachtfrost targets fans of classic round-based zombie survival who enjoy methodical defense, point spending, and co-op coordination in a historical setting. The Early Access release includes the full set of six maps and core systems, with additional eras, weapons, and features planned based on community input. Players who prefer solo runs or small-group sessions will find the revive and shared-progress mechanics supportive. Those seeking ongoing updates can join early to influence future content. The game suits anyone drawn to tense, escalating horde defense without requiring prior experience in similar titles.
