Campsite is a first-person survival horror game in the action, indie, and adventure genres. Players take on the role of a lone survivor tasked with keeping multiple campfires burning through a single night in a dense, dark forest while avoiding a persistent predator called the Hollow.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on resource management and careful movement. Six or more campfires burn at different rates, and each requires wood to stay lit. The heart of any active fire serves as the only safe zone where wounds heal and the Hollow cannot reach. Wood comes from scattered piles located between the camps, but carrying capacity limits players to three bundles at once. The same wood supply powers both the campfires and a handheld lantern, creating constant trade-offs since there is never enough for both needs at full strength.
Navigation demands attention to the environment. Fires gutter and die on their own timers, forcing repeated trips into the darkness. When a fire goes out, the Hollow claims the spot and can multiply if multiple fires fail. Relighting even one extinguished fire pushes the threat back into hiding. The lantern provides limited light during travel but drains the shared wood resource quickly.
Direct confrontation is not an option. The Hollow reacts to the player's gaze. A quick glance causes it to flinch and retreat, but prolonged eye contact removes that hesitation and invites aggression. The entity circles, waits behind trees, and exploits any lapse in attention. This creates a tense rhythm of movement, wood collection, fire maintenance, and brief visual checks to keep the predator at bay.
Game Modes
Two difficulty settings define the experience. Normal mode places six campfires across the forest layout. Hard mode increases the number to eight, tightening the window for wood runs and raising the risk of multiple fires failing simultaneously. Both modes run on procedurally arranged nights drawn from a shareable seed, so each session presents a fresh arrangement of fire locations and woodpile positions.
Sessions last roughly eight minutes whether the player reaches dawn or not. The night concludes with a report on progress and the seed code for that specific forest layout, encouraging further attempts on the same or different seeds.
The Hollow and the Spreading Dark
The Hollow functions as a reactive stalker rather than a simple enemy. It tracks the player's position at all times and only becomes aggressive when watched too long. Brief glances serve as a defensive tool to force it back into cover. The creature also exploits dead fires by turning them into breeding grounds, increasing its numbers if too many go out. Losing every fire removes its need to hide, turning the entire forest into an open hunting ground until at least one fire is restored.
These systems combine into a single rule: light equals safety. Every decision about wood allocation, pathing between camps, and visual discipline directly affects survival odds. The short duration keeps tension high without long stretches of downtime.
Replayability Through Generated Nights
Each night generates a new layout of fires and woodpiles from a seed code. Players can share successful or challenging seeds with others for identical conditions. This structure supports repeated short sessions on Normal or Hard difficulty without requiring long commitments. The two modes and seed system provide clear goals for improvement, such as lasting longer on Hard or optimizing wood routes on a familiar seed.
Is It Worth Playing?
Campsite suits players who enjoy concise, high-tension survival horror focused on resource juggling and environmental awareness rather than combat or long campaigns. The eight-minute nights and seed-based layouts make it easy to fit into short play windows while still offering meaningful replay through different difficulties and forest arrangements. Those drawn to first-person experiences that emphasize careful observation, limited resources, and a single persistent threat will find the mechanics align closely with that preference. The game remains available on PC as a standalone title with no additional modes or expansions required for the core experience.
