Battles unfold on hex fields where initiative is rolled, cover and line of sight matter, and each melee exchange lets the player choose defensive, elusive, or furious tactics. Ranged attacks, spells, and enchanted items add further options. Every fight produces wounds, experience, advancement, loot, and destiny points. Fallen members move to a memorial while the chronicle records their contributions, and the band never returns to its previous state.

Band of Fortune structures its experience around a single persistent campaign format called a saga. Each saga generates a unique region and warband, after which the player pursues a combination of exploration, threat suppression, contracts, quests, patrols, and rest periods. The campaign advances week by week, with preparation phases alternating with travel and combat. An endless mode allows a cleared region to be abandoned so veterans can march into a fresh one, carrying forward experience and equipment. Optional difficulty modifications can be applied at the start of any saga to adjust challenge without altering core rules.

Procedural generation drives replayability through randomized band composition and region layout. Six distinct battle types arise from the combination of terrain, objectives, and enemy compositions.
