Virtual Driving School is a simulation game centered on realistic driving practice and skill development. The California Region Pack expands the experience by unlocking the state's roads within the Custom Drive feature of the base game. Players gain access to procedurally generated environments drawn from real map data, allowing free exploration or guided routes across varied terrain.
Gameplay
The core loop revolves around mastering vehicle control, traffic rules, and hazard response in detailed virtual environments. Short drills focus on specific maneuvers such as gear changes, mirror checks, and junction navigation. Longer sessions place drivers on live roads with dynamic traffic, pedestrians, and changing conditions including day, night, rain, or fog. Physics emphasize realistic weight, braking distances, and handling that penalizes abrupt inputs or poor anticipation. Support for steering wheels, pedals, gamepads, and keyboard controls lets players match their preferred setup, while right-hand and left-hand drive options adjust mirrors, lane priorities, and signage accordingly. Weather and time-of-day settings carry over from the base game, altering visibility and road grip during drives.
Game Modes
Structured progression begins with tutorials and lessons that break down fundamentals into focused exercises. Tests and licences introduce extended assessed drives with scoring for major and minor faults, mirroring real examination standards. Guided drives offer curated routes that combine multiple road types and hazards. Free Drive and the expanded Custom Drive allow open-ended practice across cities, rural roads, and motorways. Career options such as Taxi Mode reward smooth, rule-compliant journeys with ratings and earnings, while Delivery Mode handles heavier vehicles with adjusted weight and braking characteristics. Bus Routes require timely stops without sacrificing safety. The California Region Pack specifically enhances Custom Drive by enabling selection of start and destination points with satnav routing or independent exploration.
California Region Pack Details
This add-on integrates California map data directly into Custom Drive. Road layouts, junctions, buildings, and surrounding landscapes generate from available source information as the player travels. Satnav provides turn-by-turn guidance when desired, or drivers can deviate freely. The pack supports the base game's full range of day, night, and weather variations. A seven-day in-game trial period lets players sample the region before purchase. An active internet connection is required for initial map data download, with file size varying by region coverage.
Is It Worth Playing?
Reception has been mixed, with players noting value in the structured lessons and realistic scenarios for building foundational habits, though some report issues with VR calibration and wheel integration. Recent updates have improved traffic AI and added a dedicated driving exam mode with live fault tracking and detailed result breakdowns. The California Region Pack appeals to those seeking extended free-roaming practice in a new setting, particularly after completing base-game content. A trial option reduces risk for interested buyers. The game suits learners or enthusiasts focused on deliberate skill-building rather than arcade-style racing, provided they have the base title and accept its emphasis on repetition and precision over high-speed competition.
