The Small Kingdom is a top-down action RPG set in a miniature world of insect empires. Players take control of an ant general navigating conflicts sparked by shards from a fallen star that grant elemental powers to those who claim them.
Gameplay
Combat unfolds in real time with strikes, dodges, and chained abilities directed at enemies including flies, beetles, spiders, and roaches. The core loop centers on exploration through invaded groves, desert kingdoms, misty highlands, and a mountain monastery while rescuing allies and confronting shard-empowered bosses in dedicated arenas.
Shards collected from the star allow attunement to Fire, Water, Earth, or Air elements. Players then progress along Bloom and Thorn mastery trees to expand capabilities. Stat investment, elemental attunement, mastery development, and ring equipping combine to shape individual builds. Rings drop from defeated princes or hidden treasures and can also be crafted.
Rescued soldiers and wizards join the company as active fighters. Workers contribute to colony reconstruction by operating the Middens, digging new tunnels, salvaging materials, and clearing paths that connect regions. The insect-scale environments feature painted forests, desert tombs, underground cities, and mountain monasteries that shift with day and night cycles plus changing weather.
Game Modes
The primary experience is a single-player campaign divided into acts. The first three acts cover the full playable sequence from start to finish, each containing distinct bosses, rescue opportunities, quests, and ring rewards. Hardcore mode restricts players to a single life and one save file, ending the run upon death.
Keyboard and mouse or controller support is available throughout. Steam Achievements and Steam Cloud saves are included. A fourth act and Survival mode remain planned for the full release after Early Access.
World and Progression
The setting remains consistently at insect scale, with tunnels linking surface and underground areas across varied biomes. Progression ties directly to shard absorption, mastery choices, and ally recruitment, which in turn expand combat options and colony infrastructure. Boss encounters emphasize unique powers and arena layouts tied to each shard-empowered prince or monster.
Exploration rewards include rings and treasures that support build customization. The day-night cycle and weather changes influence visibility and atmosphere without altering core mechanics.
Is It Worth Playing?
The Small Kingdom targets players who enjoy action RPG combat combined with light base-building and companion management in a distinctive insect-themed setting. Its real-time combat, elemental attunement system, and companion rescue mechanics create a focused single-player loop centered on exploration and incremental power growth.
Early Access launches with the first three acts complete, including Hardcore mode and controller support. No user reviews exist yet because the game has not released. Those interested in top-down action RPGs with insect-scale worlds and build customization may find value in following development through the planned updates that add a fourth act and Survival mode. The solo-developed project emphasizes player feedback for balance and polish during Early Access.
