Castle Back is a single-player voxel auto-battler roguelite that blends strategy and casual building elements on PC. Players construct fortresses atop massive wandering beasts and send them into automated battles where physics and chain reactions decide the outcome.
Gameplay
The core loop centers on preparing a fortress before each expedition. Sixty different blocks are available, including walls, cannons, catapults, mortars, harpoons, bells, water tanks, and war drums. Stacking three identical blocks merges them into stronger upgraded versions, while hidden recipes allow two different blocks to combine into entirely new structures. Thirty-eight relics provide lasting rule changes for an entire run. Physics governs every fight: removing supports causes everything above to collapse and crush lower sections, fire spreads through flammable materials, ammo crates trigger explosions, and lightning conducts across conductive blocks. Hovering over any block reveals the exact chain of destruction that would follow if it were destroyed.
Three distinct beasts shape building choices. Domba the Turtle offers a stable platform suited to defensive lines. Captain Pincer the Crab provides a broad, armored front for close-range engagements. Tuft the Mammoth supports tall, narrow stacks optimized for long-range bombardment. Feeding the chosen beast during an expedition unlocks additional floor space or width, expanding construction options as the journey progresses.
Game Modes
The main campaign spans three acts across a collapsing world, culminating in an ending. Branching paths lead to elite fortresses, villages, events, and bounties. Giant bosses appear at key points, each with unique mechanics such as rapid wall reconstruction, floating out of reach, or root-based healing. After completing the story once, Collapse levels one through five become available as extended challenges. A separate Daily Challenge offers a fresh run each day. Fortress codes let players share completed builds and engage in direct duels against friends. Battles can be sped up or skipped to the conclusion for quicker progression.
Progression and Features
Between expeditions, companions Anvil, Barley, and Whistle share personal stories around the campfire, unfolding one chapter at a time. The full package includes twenty-four Steam achievements and cloud saves. The interface supports English along with Korean, Japanese, Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Russian, and Brazilian Portuguese. Procedural elements in the world map and enemy encounters encourage repeated runs with different beast and block combinations.
Is It Worth Playing?
Castle Back suits players who enjoy thoughtful preparation followed by hands-off combat resolution. The voxel physics system and merging mechanics reward careful planning, while the roguelite structure and relic variety keep each expedition distinct. Those drawn to single-player strategy experiences with base-building and destruction elements will find the three beasts and boss encounters provide meaningful variety. The campaign length, post-story Collapse levels, and daily option extend replay value without requiring constant attention during fights. Availability on PC with the listed language support makes it accessible to a wide audience interested in this specific mix of genres.
